Know about Laser Skin Resurfacing

If your face has been left with blotches, bruises, wrinkles, or lines from age, acne, or too much time in the sun, laser skin resurfacing may make your skin look younger and healthier.
The resurfacing of the laser skin removes accurately layer by layer. The new skin cells that form during healing give the skin a surface that looks tighter and younger. The procedure can be performed alone or on the face with other cosmetic surgeries.

Getting ready for Laser Resurfacing:
To find out if you are a good candidate, start by consulting a plastic surgeon or dermatologist.
If you have cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth, tell your doctor. Laser skin resurfacing in people at risk may trigger breakouts.
When you decide to continue resurfacing with laser hair, your doctor will tell you not to take any drugs that may cause clotting 10 days before surgery.
If you smoke, you should stop before and after the procedure for two weeks. If you are prone to cold sores or fever blisters, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic medication in advance to prevent bacterial infections and also an antiviral medication.

Expect During and After the Procedure:
A plastic surgeon or dermatologist performs laser resurfacing. It is an ambulatory operation, so you won't have to stay overnight.
The doctor can treat individually or treat your entire face with wrinkles around your eyes, mouth, or forehead. The Doctor will numb the areas to be treated with a local anesthetic for small areas and may sedate you as well. If your entire face is treated, you may need general anesthesia.
It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to treat just parts of the face. It takes up to two hours to complete a treatment.
The doctor will bandage the treated areas after the laser procedure. You will have to clean the treated areas four to five times a day after 24 hours and then apply an ointment like petroleum jelly to prevent the formation of scabs.
Swelling is normal after resurfacing of the laser skin. Your doctor may prescribe steroids to control eye swelling. It can also make swelling easier to sleep on an extra pillow at night.
Healing usually takes 10 to 21 days, depending on the problem being treated. Once the skin is healed, you can use oil-free makeup to minimize redness, which usually fades in two to three months.
Also, keeping your new skin well moisturized is necessary. If you are using glycolic acid products, after about six weeks or when the doctor says you should, you should be able to start using them again.

Laser Resurfacing benefits and risks:
Although skin resurfacing is unable to produce perfect skin, it may improve your skin's appearance. Possible procedural risks include:
  • Scarring
  • Bacterial infection
  • Pigmentation varies in the body, like darker and lighter skin areas
  • Laser light burns or other wounds
