A natural dimple is the product of a small muscle opening, called the buccinator muscle, in the eye. Although it is an inherited trait, a minimally invasive surgical technique (dimpleplasty) may be used to establish this. Even though the cause of dimple is a defect in the facial muscle, in many cultures it is seen as a highly attractive trait. Dimples are considered a sign of youth and beauty which accentuate the smile of the person possessing them. People born with natural facial dimples can lose them or see a reduction of depth as they get older and the skin, muscle, and physical weight changes.
Types of Dimple Surgery
Cheek Dimple Surgery. This is the most famous and recognized dimple on the cheeks, seen in many areas of the cheek and some people have only one dimple instead of two. Dimples may add angularity to the face and sometimes, it is assumed that the person who has the operation has lost weight.
Chin Dimple Surgery. Also referred to as a cleft chin is a less common dimple on the face arising from a relation to the underlying jaw structure. Since it is a dominant feature, there is a high probability of inheriting a chin dimple if one parent has it.
Back Dimple Surgery. This type of dimple has also been referred to as the “dimple of Venus” after the Roman goddess of beauty, is the least known of the three. It is situated in the lower part of the back and is more common in women than men
Is it possible to get face dimple without surgery?
If you haven't been born with dimples, you can't get dimples that will last a long time with methods such as facial exercise. Some people have tried to get the dimples by piercing their cheeks instead of the dimpleplasty. Regrettably, piercing outcomes can be minimal and unpredictable. Most people feel uncomfortable with the idea of getting a piercing dimple.
Good candidate for dimple surgery
Many healthy people can be Dimpleplasty applicants. A summary of your medical history during your appointment and an evaluation will decide whether you are a candidate.
Any risk in dimpleplasty?
There are certain risks as with every operation. In order to make an informed decision, Dr. Sahebgowda Shetty will meet with you to discuss the procedure and the risks.
Recovery
In about 2 weeks, the sutures dissolve and absorb, and the skin softens which gives a more natural look. As the inner tissue heals it binds the muscle of the cheek to the skin, forming a dimple as smiling. This duration may range from a couple of days to several weeks depending on the healing and the degree of extracted tissue. Your new dimple usually takes a few weeks to look natural. After the surgery, you'll be able to eat but it's advised to wait until the anesthesia wears off.
How soon will I get to work again?
After the treatment, most people return to work the next day, if there is any need to take more time before returning to work.
